It's been a rough few months, and I've had a hard time maintaining focus on anything. In particular, this has meant that my efforts at using #Hubzilla
, not to mention my efforts to keep a #Yunohost
installation up and running, have floundered, and suffered significantly from neglect. It got to the point where, given how little use I had made of them, it made more sense to just start fresh. so...
As part of my larger plan for a personal reset/revival to celebrate my upcoming birthday, I have got Yunohost running again, along with Hubzilla, #Zap
(mostly for experimenting and comparing), #Matrix
, and a few others.
One of the biggest things that keeps me motivated and coming back to these alternatives, despite my other challenges, is the frustration of watching my friends, family, and even my kids, get swept up by Big Tech, the obvious, shiny solutions, in the course of trying to manage Covid19, remote work, and remote school.
As a father of school-aged kids who has been treated for acute #leukemia
twice, including undergoing a #StemCellTransplant
, a part of me is always conscious of the legacy, the memories of me, I will leave my kids. I want them to remember me as someone who, when he could, did the right thing, the better thing, and not just the easy thing.
I want to always be making choices to build a better, more humane, and #cooperative
world, and I think the choices I make in the technology and software I use are an incredibly important part of that.
I'm looking forward to learning and contributing (where, and as best I can) along the way.
